From the cmd screen I've tried to 'ping' yahoo and BBC: nothing. I've also tried running a winsock fix program, that also did nothing. I've tried winsock repair from Diagnostic in Internet Explorer Tools: did nothing. I ran connection diagnostic in Internet Explorer, which said it was damaged winsock.

It isn't an issue with the wifi, as I am connected to internet fine using my other pc (a laptop), and my ipod touch is also still connected and fine. I am connected to my wifi signal (excellent strength) on the netbook, but not connected to the internet. I then did a 'Restore' from my Backup (Clickfree Backup System btw), and got all my files back. I tried to resolve it, but gave up in the end and did the 'erecovery' via cmd prompt f10, and went back to factory default setttings.
